Humanities perspective: nostalgia is a really, really powerful factor. Far more than people often realise. When we talk about nostalgia it's often with this "silly guilty amusement"-style of discourse, when in actuality nostalgia is serious business. (Yeah, used that term on purpose, thus shooting my own proverbial foot.) That said, I don't think updates such as that one necessarily imply that things were inherently better. Just different and it's ok to be nostalgic for even the bad things. I, for example, have a huge love for crappy '80s pop music. I'm unabashedly proud of this and will readily admit that I like crappy stuff because it's something I remember from childhood.
On the second one, though, I'm SO WITH YOU! I utterly despise those style of comments. Not only are most of them dead wrong - like that one - or potentially hurtful to those who actually suffer from whatever illness they talk about. (I know a cancer survivor who gets pissed off every time she sees those about cancer.) They are a stupid guilt trip and I don't do well with being guilted into stuff. It's not positive in any fucking way.
