A Curiosity, and a Querry
Jun. 12th, 2011 12:59 pmEvery time I post a Snape/Sirius fic, invariably I get at least one comment along the lines of, "Wow, it's a Snack fic that isn't hatesex!"
Along with that, I get at least one comment that says something to the effect of, "I don't usually like this pairing, but..."
This is a tiny bit frustrating and also very confused-face-causing, and it makes me wonder...
Why do so many of y'all think Snack is nothing but hatesex? And what does everyone have against Snack?
If you're someone who's into pairings like Snarry, Snupin, Harry/Draco, or Ron/Draco*, then why not Snack? See, I go for the "animosity pairings" myself. (By that of course I mean pairings in which the parties have a history of animosity toward each other.) It makes the dynamics so much more complex and fun to explore and tinker with for me. I don't see Snack as being vastly different from the others. You've got two characters who are screwed up (who isn't in HP??) and have some serious growing up to do, and that can be explored in so many ways!
Sure, hatesex is one obvious direction you can take that -- just as you can with any of the other pairings I listed above. But there are so many other ways a relationship between the two of them can play out. Personally, I love the "I hate that I like you" or the "I'm attracted to you but I'm so not going to be the first to admit it" complexities. And my favorite thing to do with them is throw them together against their will, force them to see each other and themselves differently, and use each of them to enable the other to Grow Up and Get Over Themselves.
Which is what I often tend to do with all of my favorite pairings, really. Mutual emotional/psychological hurt/comfort and healing. Giving the characters a better ending them what they received in canon.
Not that I have anything against hatesex or manipulation or tragedy, mind you. ;)
But that's certainly not all there is to Snack.
Obviously if you're a H/D or Ron/Draco or similar shipper who hates Snape slash, I'm not talking about you. :P
